Ian Dury (May 12, 1942 – March 27, 2000) was a rock and roll singer, songwriter, & bandleader. He is better known when founder & lead singer of the British band Ian Dury & a Muttonhead, though he began his musical career within pub rock act Kilburn and the High Roads.

Ian Dury swallow a results of polio, which he contracted at the age of 7 — super belike, he believed, from either the floating pool at Southend on Sea. Ironically his 1981 song "Spasticus Autisticus", intended to mark a International Year of the Disabled, was banned by the BBC despite having been written by the disabled human. A lyrics were emphatically inflexible:

A chorus' refrain, "I'm spasticus, autisticus" was inspired per response of the rebelling gladiators of Rome who (at least within the version of the story as portrayed in Kubrick's movie), all answered to the title of their leader, "I am Spartacus", to protect him.

Managed by Andrew King, Ian Dury and A Fuckhead experienced many hit singles, including "What a Waste", "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" (which was a UK first at the beginning of 1979, selling just short of the million copies), "Reasons to be Cheerful (Part Three)" (blunt troika in a UK), & the rock and roll anthem "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll", often credited by owning introducing a sentence to the language. His music is marked by clever lyrics & word play, many jazz influences but sustaining the hard allegiance to rock and roll.

In the early 80s he disbanded the Numskull fallowing securing The recently recording treat using Polydor Records across A&R man Frank Neilson, choosing to work with a group of young musicians which he named The Music Students and recorded the album "Four Thousand Weeks' Holiday". This album marked the departure from either his common style & was non also standard by his fans for its Western jazz influence.

He got little area around many films, virtually all easily-known of which was Peter Greenaway's a Cook the Stealer His Married woman & Her Lover, as well as cameo appearances in Roman Polanski's Pirates and the Sylvester Stallone science fiction film Judge Dredd. He besides wrote the musical, Apples, staged at a Royal Court Theatre in London's Sloane Square.

Dury wrote & performed a theme song "Profoundly in Love with Pandora" for the television series A Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 (1985), based on a book of the equivalent title by Sue Townsend, when well as its watch-higher A Growing Pains of Adrian Mole (1987).

In the 1990s, Dury became an ambassador for UNICEF, recruiting stars such as Robbie Williams to publicise the stimulate.

It was known for a select few instance prior to his demise that Dury got cancer. Around 1998, his death was incorrectly announced on XFM radio by Bob Geldof, possibly due to fraud info from either the attender.

Ian Dury & The Blockheads' last performance was a charity concert in aid of Cancer Bacup on February 6th 2000 at The London Palladium.
